San Francisco — Long time San Francisco residents, aging hippies and flower children are excited about the unsealing of San Francisco’s most famous time capsule, City Lights Bookstore and Publishers. Sealed intact in 1967 with wax figurines of founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, the store was made a time capsule in order to preserve San Francisco’s image as a mecca of anti-authority rebellion. At the time, there was concern that the store and its values would become mainstream in San Francisco or that it would become some kind of institutionalized landmark.
“I’m stoked to see if the sealed bag of ganga I hid at the bottom of a box of first edition Howl and Other Poems volumes is still there,” said 76-year old Milton Piermont. “It will be like smoking vintage pre-Castro cigars.” 23-year old Molly Parsons at the L’Oreal counter in the Union Square Nordstroms was also thrilled to hear about the City Lights opening. “It’s that new club, right? I’ll tell my girls about it, thanks!”
Columbus Street will be closed the day of the capsule opening for yet another San Francisco street fair. Bring your trendy olive green Mao Zedong messenger bag and load up on autographed Shining Path posters and generally feast on communist chic.
